One-year sentence for P.A. man caught with shotguns

Dec 3, 2016 | 7:29 AM

A Prince Albert man caught with three loaded shotguns was sentenced to a year in prison by a provincial court judge yesterday. [Dec 2 update if necessary]

Sheldon Goodvoice, 20, was arrested Oct. 28 after police pulled over the grey Malibu in which he was a passenger for speeding.

Patrol officers were in the process of impounding the car and disposing of open alcohol when a check of the trunk revealed three pump-action shotguns, one of which was in plain view. The weapons were loaded with a shell each, and were easily accessible by the rear passengers. Two other occupants of the vehicle were also charged with numerous firearm and traffic violations.

Speaking prior to his sentencing, Goodvoice took sole responsibility for the shotguns. Appearing via video link, Goodvoice said the weapons were his alone, and he did not want to see the other occupants of the vehicle punished for his mistake.

Judge Steven Schiefner accepted a joint submission by the Crown and defence, and imposed three concurrent one-year sentences on Goodvoice for possession of a firearm while on prohibition order. Goodvoice was also sentenced to 45 days on other matters including breach of probation, failing to attend court, and obstructing a peace officer by providing a false name. Schiefner further imposed a lifetime weapons prohibition.

With credit for 56 days spent in custody, Goodvoice will serve one year less eleven days.
