UPDATE: Community grieves as Amber Alert ends tragically

UPDATE: The Choiceland, Sask community is grieving following the tragic death of Nia Eastman, who was subject to an Amber Alert today.

She was found deceased at roughly 12:45 p.m. by RCMP at a residence in Choiceland.

Rob McKay, superintendent of school services with the North East School Division, said ripple effects were felt throughout their schools.

“Schools are families so you have that kind of response when you have a tragic response like this. The school is grieving as is the community as is the family.”

Nipawin Provincial Court confirmed Eastman appeared in court yesterday on assault charges dating back to Aug. 23.

Nipawin RCMP have activated an Amber Alert for seven-year-old Nia Eastman.

Police have described her as 3’9” with shoulder-length blonde hair. She was last seen wearing pink eyeglasses, purple long-sleeved shirt with butterflies, pink skirt and purple leggings with silver trim at the bottom.

Police believe she was taken by Adam Jay Eastman, 45. He’s described as Caucasian, 5’9” with short brown hair and glasses.

Police are confirming Adam Jay Eastman is Nia Eastman’s father.
 
She was supposed to be returned home to her mother by 7 p.m. last night. A vehicle believed to be driven by Eastman was found on a rural property east of Smeaton near Snowden around 10 p.m. RCMP are searching the area.
 
Police don’t know which direction Adam and Nia Eastman may be heading. It’s not known if  he has access to a second vehicle
