Family Day in Ahtahkakoop to feature ‘Walk a Mile in her Shoes’ event

Aug 18, 2016 | 12:52 PM

Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation will host a ‘Walk a Mile in her Shoes’ walk during Family Day to bring more awareness to the missing and murdered indigenous women crisis in Canada.

After an overwhelming turnout at last year’s event, Garth Peekeekoot from Ahtahkakoop wanted to host another walk where everyone puts on heels with an added a fundraising component.

“With this walk we are going to raise funds to donate to the women’s shelter in P.A.,” Peekeekoot, one of the event co-ordinators, said.

The cause has a very personal meaning to a lot of the staff at the treatment center in Ahtahkakoop where Peekeekoot works.

“We deal with (the effects of murdered and missing women) on a daily basis with some of our clients and even some of our staff. Past, present, and former have had relatives who are missing themselves. It touches pretty close to home,” Peekeekoot said.

This year, two RCMP officers will attend, along with Chief Troy Cooper representing the Prince Albert Police Service according to Peekeekoot.

The event is much more than a walk, he said. There will be a balloon release in the evening to commemorate residential school survivors and victims along with live entertainment, guest speakers, and activities for children.

Family Day in Ahtahkakoop will be celebrated on August 23. The ‘Walk a Mile in her Shoes’ event will start at 11 a.m.
