Plans to open Melfort’s women shelter by June

The North East Outreach and Support Services (NEOSS) hope to open the women’s shelter this June.

“We are working on this daily and recognizing the need hoping to open as soon as we can to provide a very vital and important service to the women and children of our area,” Louise Schweitzer, executive director of North East Outreach and Support Services, said.

There are variety of documents that are required before the women’s shelter can operate as a residential facility.

Schweitzer said doors will open once the facility gets its final inspection and licensing done by the Ministry of Justice.

“Currently we are in the process of training our staff, putting the linens and everything away and the shelter, putting everything, including the furniture in place and getting the food in,” Schweitzer said.

Once completed, Melfort’s women shelter will be the first shelter built in the province in more than 25 years and will help women escaping domestic violence.
