St. Mary High School celebrates Music Monday at City Hall

May 2, 2016 | 5:00 PM

Every year on the first Monday of May, schools all across Canada celebrate Music Monday, and to commemorate this year, students from St. Mary High School played their instruments for P.A. residents in front of City Hall.

Music Monday was put together by the Canadian Music Educators Association and St. Mary High’s music teacher, Kayleigh Skomorowski, who said it’s a challenge for all school’s music programs to celebrate what they do.

“Different groups across the country worked on public performances today of stuff that they know and also the anthem (We Are One),” she said.

The anthem was written by an Ontario high school student and it’s about how music brings everyone together, which Skomorowski said is perfect for Music Monday itself. She said an annual contest is held to choose what the anthem will be for that year.

“Our last anthem was actually written by Chris Hadfield… so this year they went with a student-driven competition which kind of suits the theme a bit better,” she said.

She feels music education is so important because it’s a form of self-expression and can help students find who they are and come out of their shells. She added music programs often get left behind a school’s academic and athletic programs.

For next year, Skomorowski challenges other schools and music programs in P.A. to get involved and celebrate musical education.

“This is one school and one small percentage, but it would be wonderful just to see more of us together out here celebrating what we do,” she said.
