Terriers continue streak over Mustangs to start WCC

Apr 30, 2016 | 4:31 PM

The Melfort Mustangs couldn’t crack the puzzle that is the Portage Terriers, as they were beaten 2-1 to start the 2016 Western Canada Cup Saturday in Estevan.

The Mustangs are now 0-5 against the Terriers since last season. The Mustangs and Terriers faced each other a total of four times in last year’s Western Canada Cup and RBC Cup national championship. The Terriers outscored the Mustangs 19-8 in the four Terriers victories, including a 6-1 Terriers victory in the RBC semifinals.

On Saturday, Terriers defenceman Brett Orr made it 2-0 on a power play early in the second period, after Terriers forward Nick Henry scored the lone goal in the first period.

Mustangs forward Travis Mayan drew the Mustangs within one, but that was all the offence they could muster.

Terriers goaltender Nathan Mark made 20 saves in the victory. Mustangs goaltender Richard Palmer had 29 stops.

Literally crossing the line

Three Mustangs, Dakota Boutin, Kalem Zary and Rylan Freed all started the game with 10 minute misconducts as they penalized with ‘warm up violations’ for crossing the red line during warm ups. Ryan Hendrix received the same penalty for the Terriers, as well.

That forced Zary to get ejected midway through the second period. Zary received his second misconduct on a head contact penalty, and as a result was given an automatic game misconduct. The Mustangs had to play the final 33 minutes of the game down a man.

The Terriers also had to play the final 26 minutes down a man as Riley Thiessen was issues a game misconduct for a checking from behind minor penalty.

Looking ahead

The Mustangs will have Sunday off before playing the only game on Monday against the Brooks Bandits. They’ll play the hosting Estevan Bruins on Tuesday and the West Kelowna Warriors on Thursday to close out their group stage. The Warriors also feature Prince Albert products in rookie Reed Gunville and head coach Rylan Ferster.
