Lockdown at St. Francis School “a precaution”

Apr 28, 2016 | 10:21 AM

An average Thursday morning, turned into elementary schools Ecole Vickers and St. Francis placed on lockdown. A heavy police presence surrounded St. Francis at roughly 9 a.m., as parents stood across the street looking understandably concerned.

A man resisting treatment from Parkland Ambulance after a person down call, fled in the direction of St. Francis School, Prince Albert Police Service Sergeant Brandon Mudry said.

Mudry said the man never went into the school and the investigation into his whereabouts continues.

“At this point we have no reason to believe he ever entered the school, but every precaution is being taken,” he said.

Police confirmed as of 10:10 a.m., St. Francis and neighbouring Ecole Vickers is no longer under lockdown.

Lorel Trumier director of education with the Catholic School Division said students were safe inside the school during the lockdown.

“Our students are continuing with the education process, and we’ll let police do what they need to do,” Trumier said. “(Police) just want to be cautious because anytime you’re near a school you want to be very cautious around that area,” she said adding she was very grateful the police notified the school immediately.

If emergency service were needed, Trumier said she wouldn’t want students to witness something upsetting or get in the way of police.

“Parents are going to start to hear about it and we want them to know students are safely inside. There was no direct threat to the students,” Trumier said.

Police are searching for a man described as 30-years-old wearing coveralls with a black bandana hanging out of his pocket.
