UPDATE: P.A. police searching for escaped man

An accused murderer was busted out of lawful custody last night.

Braidy Chase Vermette, 28, is facing a charge of First Degree Murder in the death of Troy Cecil Napope in 2015.

Police were dispatched to the Victoria Hospital at 10:34 p.m. after receiving a report of bear mace being used. While enroute, police were informed Vermette had escaped in a dark S.U.V, when arriving at the hospital for a self-inflicted laceration on his arm.

During the incident, two masked people approached the correctional officers who were transporting Vermette.

One of them had a gun, the other bear mace. The bear mace was used on the correctional officers. They were not seriously injured in the incident.

Drew Wilby, executive director of corrections and policing for the Ministry of Justice, explained that correctional officers in Saskatchewan are not armed with firearms at any time. “Often times having those individuals armed can cause problems,” he said.  

They do carry pepper spray or batons, but Wilby did not reveal whether they had those at the time. 

Vermette is considered to be armed and dangerous and should not be approached. He is described as 6’02”, 240lbs, with black short hair and brown eyes.

“Our primary concern right now is to return Mr. Vermette to police custody so that he can be back within the walls of a correctional facility,” Wilby said, noting that public safety comes first.

Vermette was scheduled to appear in Prince Albert Provincial Court on Monday, April 4.

Police are currently investigating and ask anyone who has information to call the PAPS or Crime Stoppers at 1(800)222-TIPS.

The Ministry of Justice, Corrections and Policing will be conducting an internal investigation to understand all the circumstances around the escape and to make recommendations to prevent any future escapes of this nature.
