Little snow can’t keep snowmobile fundraiser down

Feb 7, 2016 | 7:12 AM

The lack of snow wasn’t enough to keep the Prairie Women on Snowmobiles (PWOS) off the trails.

During their 2016 mission, snowmobiling from Prince Albert to Broadview, they raised just shy of $160,000 for breast cancer research and awareness.

“We never have a goal in mind,” PWOS President Carol Lueken said. “Anything we get is more than we had when we started, and we’re very appreciative of that.”

Roughly $81,000 will go to the Canadian Cancer Society to fund research. The remaining amount, nearly $78,000, will be used to purchase equipment for the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency.

“We’ve asked [the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency} to give us a wish list, and when we get that we look at it and see what our money can buy,” Lueken said.

The snowmobile trails were less than ideal for the tour. The 10 PWOS riders managed to keep their machines on the trail from Prince Albert to Yorkton over two days. After Yorkton they ran out of snow, and had to take a van the rest of the trip.

Even with the poor weather and relatively high temperatures, Leuken called mission 2016 a “huge success.

“Our main goal is to spread the awareness on how early detection truly is the key.”
