POLL: Crusaders ready for Canadian Tire Classic against Marauders

Sep 10, 2015 | 11:49 AM

The Carlton Comprehensive High School Crusaders senior football team has been preparing for the annual Canadian Tire Classic against the St. Mary High School Marauders.

Grade 12 quarterback Chris McLachlan said he feels differently coming into this game as a senior then he did during the last two seasons.

“I think the difference is how I’ve matured as an athlete,” said McLachlan. “Before I came in thinking it was the first game for me and it wasn’t as important, but now I got to come out there and be a leader on the team because I’m a veteran and have played football for most of my life.”

Head Coach Lindsay Strachan said he has been pushing his players to treat the game the same and keeping improving.

“Our message all week has been that there really isn’t a lot of difference,” said Strachan. “It’s week two of our season and it is about the process of getting better and improving from last week.

“The one difference I would say there with this game is that it’s a celebration of football in Prince Albert, and it’s a great opportunity for an all-P.A. match up and it has a great atmosphere.”

Tanner Pedersen, a linebacker who’s also in grade 12, said he thinks the defence has to play a strong game.

“We just need to come out and do what we do best, which is hit,” said Pederson. “There’s nothing to it, we need to fly around and make plays and not let one mistake bring us down.”

Strachan said he wants his players to give it their all and have fun doing so.

“The advice I would have is again we have put a lot of time and energy into this, so enjoy the opportunity to play in front of a great atmosphere.”

Carlton plays the St. Mary team at 6:30 p.m. Sep. 10 at the Max Clunie Field.
