Leslie Black denied further legal aid

The man responsible for a brutal assault in Prince Albert last summer, which left a woman badly burned, remains without legal representation.

Leslie Black made a brief court appearance Tuesday morning at Prince Albert Provincial Court.

Two weeks ago, his lawyer Adam Masiowski withdrew from the case.  The director of legal aid has since reviewed the file and has denied Black further legal aid services.

The director of Legal Aid would not comment on the specific reasons for the denial.

Black told the judge on Tuesday he plans to appeal the decision.  His appeal will be heard by the legal aid commission, and they may overturn the director’s decision.

If Black’s appeal is denied, a court appointed lawyer will be provided for him.

Last April, Black pleaded guilty to attacking Marlene Bird. 

Bird suffered third degree burns to her body and both her legs were amputated.

The case is back in court September 15.
