Animal rescue relocating pets threatened by fire

Jul 6, 2015 | 6:39 AM

The wildfires in northern Saskatchewan are not only causing problems for humans, they’re threatening the animals that reside in the north.

The Northern Animal Rescue, based in La Ronge, is looking for help relocating those animals left behind.

Its Facebook page shows the Northern Animal Rescue has been trying to connect with pet owners since the general, then mandatory evacuation was ordered in the La Ronge area.

Many people have located dogs and are looking to help, while others are offering help.

Pauline Clark, a community board member with the rescue, said the animals they’ve been able to help and get to have been sent south if they can find rides for them.

“Sometimes [getting rides] is the problem. Everybody who’s leaving is already packed up and full with their own animals and their own stuff.”

She said finding rides has been their biggest challenge, along with actually finding the animals.

“We’ve had many pleas for help for sure, and there are many [animals] out there that we don’t know about so we’re doing the best we can.”

There are foster parents in Saskatoon right now, the Prince Albert SPCA is putting up as many animals as they can, and Clark said they are receiving messages from all around the province of people who can take some of the animals.

Regina and Moose Jaw are also destinations for some of the northern animals.

Animals looking for temporary homes include dogs, cats, birds and even horses.

Clarke said if anyone has any kind of availability to give them a call at 306-420-6550.

On fire patrol in LaRonge looking for flying ember fires- and taking care of the last locals left when we can. They are doing great right now BTW.
