Saskatoon to host UFC event

Saskatoon will host an Ultimate Fighting Championship event this summer.

SaskTel Centre confirmed the UFC event is set for Aug. 23 in Saskatoon.

Fifth-ranked Max Holloway (13-3) will take on seventh-ranked Charles Oliveira (20-4, one no contest) in the main event, the UFC said Monday in a release. The five-round bout could determine the next title contender in the featherweight division.

Additional bouts will be announced in the coming weeks. Tickets go on sale June 26.

The announcement comes two months after the provincial government created the Athletics Commission of Saskatchewan. The newly minted sanctioning body will oversee all professional combat sports in Saskatchewan.
