Strip searching Regina high school students rare but possible

Mar 1, 2015 | 12:43 PM

It might be rare in Regina, but it is possible for a high school student to be strip searched. However, it would be done much differently than in Quebec.

A 15-year-old high school student in Quebec recently told media that she was forced to strip in front of a teacher because she was suspected of having drugs.

Education Minister Yves Bolduc came out and defended the practice saying strip searches were allowed in Quebec high schools as long as they were done in a manner that was “very respectful” to the student.

Shortly after he made the comments the minister not only resigned but quit politics all together.

Regina Public Schools says if a student was suspected of having something illegal on them, one of the school administration’s first courses of action would be to call in their School Resource Officer (SRO) along with the student’s parents.

From there the officer could conduct an “airport style” putdown. Police said that would be on the outside of clothing and could include the cuffs of a pant leg and the inside of a belt.

As for searching a locker, that could only be done by the principal, unless police have a warrant.

If there’s evidence to suggest that the student may be hiding something underneath their clothing, they would be brought to the police station where they could be asked to strip in private, but police insist that would require very unique circumstances.
