Travel industry remains on course despite troubles at sea

May 28, 2013 | 12:11 PM

In the past 15 months, there have been over 20 fires aboard cruise ships.

The most recent incident happened this week on a cruise ship destined for the Bahamas. No one was hurt, and all the passengers were offered full refunds.

Despite the troubling news, the local travel industry is proceeding, full speed ahead.

“We have a West World tour, that has a cruise around Hawaii, and that's sold out,” said Angel Denis at CAA Travel.

Denis said they have not seen any impact on business thus far.

It's the same story over at Travel Masters.

Owner Susan Currie said that cruise ship vacations remain popular despite the recent events. She added that accidents unfortunately do happen.

“It's like you are driving down the road and there is a car accident, only trouble is there's 3,000 plus people on board these ships so it's kind of newsworthy. I'm going on a cruise next month and I'm so looking forward to it,” said Currie.

Currie said cruise ships have been upgrading their equipment so these accidents should be few and far between. That being said, Denis would like to see more done.

“Well obviously these cruise ships need to get their acts together because something is not right with all this,” said Denis.

There could be one plus side to the recent mishaps. Industry experts are predicting that the cost to go on a cruise vacation will drop in the coming months, as the industry attempts to recover.
