Woman accused of killing man still in custody

A Wahpeton Dakota First Nation woman facing a second-degree murder charge for allegedly killing a man with a car will remain in custody for another week.

Valerie Standing, 26, also faces charges of impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing death, dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death and death caused by criminal negligence. She appeared in a Court of Queen’s Bench courtroom in Prince Albert Tuesday, where her bail hearing was adjourned until April 30.

She sat quietly hunched forward in the prisoner’s box during the brief appearance, as her family sat behind her.

“The reason is we’re hoping to get her a place in PA,” her lawyer Peter Abrametz Jr. said before the hearing.
