Grandson charged in Pelican Narrows murder

Dec 27, 2010 | 1:12 PM

The murder of a 63-year-old Pelican Narrows woman has saddened the community.

Jean Ballantyne was found dead, outside her home Christmas morning.

Her nephew, Noah Ballantyne, said she raised many of her grandchildren.

It’s her own grandson – a 20-year-old man whose name is not being released – who has been charged with first-degree murder. She raised him in her home.

Noah said Jean was a caring woman.

“Jean Ballantyne was a very nice lady, she never drank, she went to church regularly with her husband,” he said.

“She helped everybody who needed help – she was a very good lady”

Noah said violence is big issue in the northern village.

“People are getting flown out, people going to the hospital, young people getting together and ganging up on each other using clubs and sticks and whatever they can get their hands on,” he said.

An autopsy has been ordered for Jean this week. RCMP have not released a cause of death.

The man charged with murder is in custody and will appear in Prince Albert provincial court on Wednesday.
