SaskTel plans internet upgrade for local businesses

Jan 18, 2013 | 5:00 AM

SaskTel announced a new plan to bring better internet service to the province’s nine major urban centres on Wednesday.

The project will convert existing DSL business customers in the downtown areas of Saskatoon, Regina, Moose Jaw, Weyburn, Estevan, Swift Current, Yorkton, North Battleford and Prince Albert.

The transition in these downtown areas should only require an equipment upgrade. But in residential areas more disruption is expected, “We are in every back alley, and do need to run a direct pipe into each customer’s home so it is a very time intensive and resource intensive project for us” said Michelle Englot, director of external communications for SaskTel.

The switch from DSL to fibre will provide higher bandwidth capacity and faster internet speeds.
