SARM endorses Prince Albert bridge campaign

Nov 15, 2012 | 5:19 AM

Farm leaders in the province are throwing their support behind a new bridge for the Prince Albert region.

Delegates at the annual Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM) convention in Saskatoon passed a resolution Wednesday to endorse the Build A Second Bridge campaign.

The campaign was launched last March as a way to bring the need of a second bridge to the attention of senior levels of government following the discovery of a cracked girder on the Diefenbaker Bridge seven months earlier.

The failed girder resulted in a crippling weight restriction for the trucking industry and has been an ongoing headache for motorists due to continuing lane closures.

Norma Sheldon, Reeve for the Rural Municipality of Prince Albert brought the resolution to the floor saying the troubled bridge has caused significant economic hardship for surrounding municipalities and the north.

“It has presented problems for the RM of Prince Albert in some of our roads. We are defined by rivers and we have ferries and those ferry roads were used heavily during the time that bridge was compromised.”

“So we’re asking for the support of his delegation to say, ‘“Yeah, we support this campaign.’’’

The resolution passed without any debate. SARM is the latest group to join the campaign which has 1500 letters of support and is backed by surrounding municipalities.
