Strong showing in advanced polls

Oct 22, 2012 | 11:53 AM

A record number of voters used the city’s advanced polls to vote in this year’s municipal election.

Advanced polls were open over five days beginning on Oct. 10 and according to the Prince Albert City Clerk’s office, 739 people cast their ballot through the system.

City Clerk Cliff Skauge said it beat out previous advanced polls and showed the city’s advertising strategies were successful.

In 2006, 613 residents used advanced polls. In the 2009 election it was 561.

“We increased our numbers from 2009 so that’s a positive,” he said. “Pretty well, it’s beyond the previous two elections so I’m thinking that’s a successful advanced poll. We did considerable advertising, things like that and our election guide.”

Skauge said that while more people used advanced polls, it was also important to note there were more wards to vote in compared to previous years.

“We’ve got more candidates this time so I think that’s going to have an impact,” he said.

Skauge said votes cast in advanced polls remain in sealed ballot boxes until election night when they are counted along with regular votes.

Election day is Oct. 24.
