PA golfers dominate provincials in windy Warman

WARMAN- Golfers representing Prince Albert’s Cooke Municipal Golf Course won just about every award possible at the 2012 Golf Saskatchewan Provincial Championships, which wrapped up Wednesday at The Legends Golf Course in Warman.

Cory Selander won the 2012 SGI Canada Junior Men’s Championship, while Brooke Hobson took the top prize for the Junior Women’s Championship.

Both also won team awards, as Selander, Zach Hurd and Cory Sawchuk earned the Junior Men’s Team Cup, while Hobson and Kayla Sawchuk shared the Junior Women’s Team Cup.

“It’s just great to see, these kids work so hard and we’re extremely proud of them,” said Cooke’s head professional Darcy Myers, who made the trip down to Warman for the tournament. “It’s a great day for Cooke Municipal in general.

“We knew we had a lot of talent down here and obviously they really shown throughout the week. We’re really proud of them.”

It wasn’t an easy path towards the victory as every golfer in the field had to deal with awful conditions.

After a clear Monday, play was called off on Tuesday due to weather and resumed on Wednesday. But on Wednesday, the wind was so strong it threatened to send the flagsticks flying out of their holes.

“It was very intense. On Hole 8, I think I hit a 6-iron 75 yards, so that’s at least a five or six-club wind,” said Selanders. “It’s very different from what I’m used to at Cooke, the trees guard you on almost every hole. Here, there’s not one tree.

“The balls in the wind on every hole, you just have to hit it and see where it ends up.”

Selanders, 15, shot a 74 on day one and a 71 on day two, and headed into the last day of the tournament one over par and was leading the field. On Wednesday with the crazy winds, he shot an 89, and finished at +18 for the tournament.

He was one of the first players to have completed his round and waited all day to see if he was the winner or not.

“(My last round) was definitely not good, but I knew it would be ok with this wind,” said Selanders. “Not many people were going to be coming in low, turned out I was good enough to win.”

Coming into the tournament, Selanders had finished in third place in back-to-back Maple Leaf Junior Tour Saskatchewan Series tournaments, June 2-3 at Cooke and June 29-30 in Warman.

Hobson admitted she hadn’t played as much golf this year as she usually does, but when she has, she’s gotten great results.

On top of her win this week, Hobson won the MJT tournament in the girls division June 29-30 in Warman, and won the First Flight at Ladies Northern Golf Championships at Cooke June 2 despite being only 13 years old.

When asked about her impressive finish against the women, Hobson had a big grin and said she’ll try again against women at the Saskatchewan Amateur Women’s Championships July 9-11 at the Willows in Saskatoon.

“Hopefully I’ll do well there,” said Hobson.

Although Selanders and Hobson swept the individual events for Cooke, Myers was happy with all 15 golfers that represented the club.

“We’re proud, not just of Cory and Brooke, but all of them,” said Myers. “They just did a great job and we’re really happy to have them.”

Hobson’s Cooke teammate Kayla Sawchuk finished in second in the girls event.

Selanders finished one stroke ahead of both Moose Jaw’s Leighton Bearchell and Unity’s Justin Wood, who were both +19.

Hurd finished eighth, Justin Paradis was tied for 13th and Cory Sawchuk was tied for 20th. Hobson’s brother Cole was tied for 23rd.
