PA girl makes top 100 in Over the Rainbow competition

A Prince Albert actress and singer is a top 100 finalist in a national televised competition.

Jody Jordan Johnson is trying out to play Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz. It’s part of CBC’s new show “Over the Rainbow.”

Johnson’s already made it past her first audition in Halifax. She’s spending Thursday (June 21) and Friday this week in Toronto before the contestants are narrowed down to the top twenty.

Johnson said this competition is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to live out her passion.

“I just think the part is really exciting and different, and it’s for a young girl,” she said. “I just think it would be a lot of fun to experience.”

Johnson said musical theatre is her favourite because it gives her the chance to sing and dance.
Her singing teacher, Karen Langlois, has been working with Johnson since she was six-years-old. As a kid, Johnson was overly enthusiastic, working hard to learn more songs and always excited to do it.
“She was just always waiting for more and more information,” said Langlois.

Over the years Johnson has grown as a singer. She’s sang at Canada Day, the taste of PA, the street fair, Kiwanis music festival, and many musicals and plays throughout high school.

Langlois said she’s grown into a singer whose voice is full of clarity and natural talent. When her student did her first audition for the show, the judges must have seen her potential.

“I think what they saw was this really talented girl who could mold her voice and accept what they said,” said Langlois.

Three days before heading to Toronto, Johnson received four songs from the producer she was expected to know for the show, and Johnson worked on them with her music teacher.

Johnson said she isn’t sure what to expect in Toronto, but guessed that it will be a lot of singing, dancing, and acting for the judges.

“I’m nervous and excited,” she said the night before her plane took off.
