Local MP thrilled to see end of long gun registry

Feb 16, 2012 | 10:36 AM

The Federal long gun registry is all but dead.

A bill to abolish the registry passed easily in the House of Commons Wednesday night. It now goes to the Senate, where it is practically guaranteed passage.

“There are a lot of happy people watching this bad piece of government policy get removed,' said Prince Albert MP Randy Hoback.

Hoback said everyone he spoke to in his riding was opposed to the registry.

“The reason they wanted it to end was the cost of it overall; secondly because it was ineffective in preventing crime; and third it made law abiding hunters and farmers criminals.'

The Federal Government has in recent months brought in several new measures dealing with crime, including legislation that provides tougher sentences for repeat offenders and for repeat youth crime offenders.

“What we need to do is bring forward programs like ones being used in Prince Albert, to head off criminals, and to interact with youth before they commit that first crime or second crime and get them on the path to be a good, solid citizen' said Hoback.

The bill to end the long gun registry is expected to be given Royal Assent within the next couple months.
