Saskatoon students return to St. Peter school after gun incident

Jan 30, 2012 | 1:08 PM

Students are back to class at St. Peter elementary school in Saskatoon where they can talk to about an eventful Thursday, when a gun went off in a grade five classroom.

The .45 calibre handgun went off while in an 11-year-old’s backpack. The bullet struck a locker. No one was hurt.

Parents contacted by the school's principal were told that St. Peter’s would remain open for the rest of Thursday. The Catholic School Board told NewsTalk Radio its 'tragic events response team' was at the school that afternoon along with a councilor, and that they would be back on Monday.

The crisis councilors will be at St. Peter's on Monday for students who want to talk about the incident.

Some parents have said they want their children to see an expert after such a startling event.

Holly Sabo has said she is concerned about lingering psychological effects on her son after such an incident.

She showed up at the school her son attends only to find his classroom empty on Thursday. Sabo eventually found her son in the school's computer lab, still startled form that morning's events.

“It was very loud. They all screamed; they were really scared,” she said.

Students weren’t in school on Friday as it was a common dismissal day for Catholic schools in Saskatoon.

Meanwhile, on Friday, police said they seized a number of weapons from the home of the 11-year-old boy. They included a number of long guns and another handgun.
