Lloydminster train bridge collapses

Oct 11, 2011 | 6:57 PM

A semi truck carrying a construction vehicle smashed into a train bridge overpass in Lloydminster's east side on Tuesday, causing one side of the overpass to collapse, and blocking off a major passageway through the city.

“The building shook,”  said Roger Haggs, who saw the whole thing while working nearby.

“He hit it good and hard.”

No one was injured, said Haggs, adding he saw the driver walking around the scene after the collision.

It could have been much worse for the truck driver according to another witness at the scene.

“If he had hit that bridge any harder…it comes and topples over right on the cab of that truck,” said Kurt Price with 95.9 Loyd FM.

Price was surprised that the bridge took the damage it did, since it has been hit before.

Highway 16 was reportedly closed in both directions.

Silver lining

CP Rail spokesperson Mike LoVecchio reported some good news to cushion the bad.

“There were no trains in the area at the time of the incident, and CP has rerouting options in place to maintain service for our customers.”

He did not say how long the highway would be blocked.
