Lockdown lifted at penitentiary

The Saskatchewan Penitentiary is back to normal operations today.

A lockdown that was imposed late last week has now been lifted.

“The institution returned to regular routine this morning after some of the aggressors and instigators last Thursday were identified. We made some transfers and we segregated some of the aggressors,” said Darcy Begrand, spokesman for the penitentiary.

An incident happened in a small exercise yard. Three inmates were assaulted by fellow inmates. The injuries were not life threatening.

“It would appear that there is a large group of individuals targeting a smaller group of individuals.

There are going to be some underlying issues that will come out as part of the investigation,” said Begrand.

The RCMP is continuing their investigation into the incident and at this time no charges have been laid.

Begrand said the institution will be cooperating with the RCMP to see if they can have some charges laid in this incident.
