Pelican Narrows RCMP are investigating reports a 13-year-old female was struck by bullet fragments during a Ministry of Environment operation to remove problem bears.

At roughly 10:10 p.m. on Aug. 3, RCMP responded to reports the female was struck near Jan Lake after a Conservation Officer shot a firearm in the direction of a bear located in a tree.

A member of the public, who was assisting in the operation, also shot a firearm at one of the bears after it hit the ground.

The 13-year-old was standing away from the scene and struck by a ricochet bullet fragment and taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
