Top shooters take aim in Prince Albert

Jul 20, 2018 | 8:00 AM

Some of the best marksmen and women in the country descend on the Prince Albert Pistol and Rifle Club this weekend for the Western Canadian Skeet Championship.

Over 30 competitors are involved at the west range including Prince Albert’s Marcia Postle who is regularly ranked in the top three in the nation.

In describing the sport president of the club Steve Jeffers said it highlights extraordinary hand-eye coordination.

“There are a lot of passing shots in skeet,” he told paNOW. “You shoot a single shot, another single shot, and then you’d shoot the two targets at once, coming from the low and high house. They’re coming at around 100 kilometres an hour so it’s an eyes-and-reaction sport.”

Jeffers said the venue lends itself well for spectators to get a sense of how skillful the shooters are.

“It’s fun to watch and you can get up close and personal,” he said.” You’ll need to wear ear plugs though because we’re shooting all the different gauges of shotgun from 12, 20, 28 and 410 bore.”

Events start Friday afternoon with the doubles skeet, with action also slated from Saturday and Sunday morning.

The event will fall under the watchful eye of organizer Myron Sosnowski.
