Province supports YWCA shelters in P.A., Saskatoon

The Saskatchewan Government is offering financial support for programs that shelter victims of violence in Prince Albert and Saskatoon.

The YWCAs in both cities will receive approximately $1.4 million in funding from the province this year through a three-year funding agreement. In Prince Albert, the money will go towards Our House, along with Central Avenue Residential Services, which offers short-term shelter for women in crisis and their children.

According to Prince Albert YWCA CEO Donna Brooks, last year’s funding helped offer shelter to 276 women and 88 children.

“The funding provided by the Ministry of Justice is essential in ensuring women and children in the Prince Albert area have a safe place to stay when experiencing homelessness, domestic violence or any other crisis,” Brooks said in a statement.

Justice Minister Don Morgan said the new funding will help the much-needed shelters continue with their important work.

“This funding will help ensure that Saskatchewan women and children in crisis have somewhere to turn when they find themselves in need of emergency shelter,” Morgan said in a release Wednesday.

In Saskatoon, the funding will support the YWCA Crisis Shelter, which offers short-term accommodations for women and children experiencing homelessness for reasons including violence and personal safety.
