P.A. bass player enjoying life back on the road

A bass player born and raised in Prince Albert said playing in front of friends and family at the SaskTel Centre was an incredible feeling.

Steve Adams’ band One Bad Son was part of the Rock 102 Meltdown Show Tuesday night. The Saskatoon arena, which seats over 15,000, was nearly sold out for the show.

“Growing up in Prince Albert, that’s kind of the dream, to play Sasktel Centre,” Adams said, adding the energy from the crowd was indescribable.

Along with One Bad Son, the show featured well-known rock bands 10 Years, In This Moment and Shinedown. Adams said all the bands get along well.

“The guys from Shinedown have been so kind to us, it’s really incredible,” he said. “We see them all the time and we stop and chat with them.”

Adams said the opportunity to tour with more established bands like Shinedown provided some learning opportunities, and he has asked for advice on more than one occasion.

“It’s like an athlete studying the tape,” Adams said. “I’ve gotten to know Shinedown’s bass tech a little bit, so I’ve picked his brain a little bit about his setups.”

Adams was born and raised in P.A., but moved to Saskatoon in 2005 where he joined the band. He later made the decision to walk away, finding the lifestyle of touring too difficult for that point in his life. Despite his early misgivings, when the band needed a new bass player in the fall, Adams auditioned and was invited back in.

The bands have two more stops to make on their eight-show tour, which is coming to Lethbridge on Wednesday and Abbotsford Friday. Adams said touring is still difficult at times, but the energy from the fans makes it all worthwhile.

“There have been a couple nights where I’ve had three hours sleep, but that all goes away when you hit the stage and there is an arena full of people screaming,” Adams said.
