Championship curling returns to Melfort

Nov 3, 2017 | 2:48 PM

For the first time since 2013, the City of Melfort is hosting a provincial curling championship.

The 2018 Scotties Tournament of Hearts will take place at the Northern Lights Palace from Jan. 2 to7, 2018. Host committee chair Corrie Fischl is excited at the prospects.

“We’re thrilled, absolutely thrilled,” she said. “The [Northern Lights] Palace always looks amazing when turned into a curling venue; it looks so professional. It’s a provincial event, but it looks like a national championship event.”

Nine women’s teams from across Saskatchewan will make up the field and Fischl is expecting a high calibre competition.

“These women work hard at their game all year; it’s not just the curling season. It’s exciting, it’s what they all strive for; to get to that national championship,” she said.

The third weekend in December will be the last qualifying event, and the teams will be finalized following that.

The week of the tournament will consist of a pair of cabarets with live music. The club is still volunteers. Anyone interested may contact the curling club for details.
