Give a Little Life – Intensive Care Unit

Sep 14, 2015 | 10:22 AM

Ysanne Gabora was at home in Prince Albert with her children last December when it all went wrong.

What she thought was the start of the flu, quickly progressed to her being rushed to Victoria Hospital drifting in and out of consciousness. Discovering that they didn’t yet know the problem, was terrifying.  When she heard the nurses instruct her family to come to the hospital immediately, Ysanne was certain she was in grave danger.

She was stabilized and entered the Victoria Hospital Intensive Care Unit on Christmas Eve. Ysanne was told that she had septic shock due to a blood infection.

Her pain was excruciating, she could not move and she needed equipment to keep her breathing. Imagine being immobile, in pain and wondering if you will see your children again?  For Ysanne, her determination to get back home to her family is what kept her going.

Eventually she learned that it was pneumonia that was causing her life-threatening situation and it was nine more days before she went home, but she did go home.  Although it took her body and lungs months to heal and recover, she did recover.

Today, Ysanne’s young children have their mother back, and her husband has his wife back.

Ysanne’s story is one of an Intensive Care Survivor, and this year’s ‘Give a Little Life’ Day is raising money for our hospital’s Intensive Care Unit.

On December 4th, please listen to our radiothon broadcast as we tell the story of this vitally important part of our hospital.  Miracles happen every day in our ICU. Be part of the miracle this year.  Join us December 4th and give a little, to give a life.

Thank you Ysanne, for sharing your inspirational story!  On December 4, please listen to our radiothon, then please give.
