Saskatchewan teachers prepare to strike again

After just three days, talks between the Saskatchewan Teacher's Federation and the Saskatchewan government trustee bargaining committee have once again broken off. It means parents may be scrambling to find childcare once again next week.

Teachers first went to the bargaining table asking for a 12 per cent raise over one year. This week, they revised that to 16.3 per cent over three years. 

The commitee is offering 5.5 per cent over three years.

Sandi Urban Hall, wih the bargaining committee, said it shows teachers are unwilling to negotiate.

“We had looked at places where we felt that there was some opportunity and flexibility and wanted to explore that further, and the discussions just broke down,” explained Urban Hall.

Teachers have already staged a one-day strike.

Documents obtained Thursday show that the STF has approved a two-day teacher strike for Wednesday, May 25 and Thursday, May 26.

It would be a full strike, so no classes and no teacher-run extracurricular activities.

paNOW expect to get official word from the union by mid-morning Friday.
