Best Martial Arts Studio: LDP Martial Arts

Oct 26, 2017 | 6:04 PM

Lucian Phillips has over 30 years of training and over 20 years of international competition and coaching experience for martial arts. Now, he holds a new title of owning and operating the best martial arts studio in Prince Albert.

“I started Taekwondo in 1986 and began teaching in Prince Albert in 1998. I took over the club that my parents started in 1993.” said Phillips. In 2005, he earned his 4th degree blackbelt in Taekwon Do, and the same year he began training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. In 2016, he was awarded his brown belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Training area

In 2011, he started LDP Martial Arts located at 243 South Industrial Drive and has been teaching Taekwondo, Jiu Jitsu, Kickboxing and Mixed Martial Arts ever since. Phillips has competed at the national and international level and several of his students are following in his footsteps.

“My student Christina Vis is going to the world championships for Taekwondo in Ireland. I also train Ryan Rohovich who is now a professional MMA fighter and I have coached provincial, western Canadian and national champions,” he said.

Workout facility onsite

LDP Martial Arts studio is now the training ground for many students. Phillips said his youngest student is 4-and-a-half-years-old and his oldest is 65. He also has parents who join beginner classes with their children.

“There is definitely more awareness since MMA fighting became popular a few years ago but there is still a mentality that these sports are only for a certain type of person….tough guys,” Phillips said. “People don’t realize that anybody can train…men, women, and children of all ages.”

LDP Martial Arts sells all of the equipment needed for the various classes including uniforms for Taekwondo, Jiu Jitsu gis and gloves or shin pads for sparring. In addition to his classes, Phillips also offers personal training and private lessons. Each client has their own unique goals from losing weight to gaining confidence.

New location newly renovated to ensure students have the best experience possible

“I have had people lose 30 pounds in a year and keep it off. I’ve seen kids become more outgoing and confident and they deal with their stresses better because they learn how to express themselves in this class,” he explained.

“The biggest thing I want people to know is that the martial arts are a great way to keep anyone active and growing.”
