Best Pub/ Bar: Prince Albert Brewing Company Inc. (PABCo)

Oct 6, 2017 | 12:00 AM

Tasty chicken wings, AAA steak and a great pint of beer … all good reasons to stop in at Prince Albert Brewing Company (PABCo). Whether you’re a regular, or trying it for the first time, you won’t be disappointed with the menu at PABCo.

Add in locally-produced beer named after local Prince Albert landmarks and it’s easy to see why PABCo has been named the Best Pub/Bar at the 2017 BOB Awards.

“We don’t have a large menu, but we like to think that everything we put out is top quality with generous portions,” says owner Rob McLeod.

A previous BOB Award winner in 2014, PABCo sources most of their menu items locally and operates a micro-brewery on site, featuring a variety of hand-crafted beer named after some local-area sites. Try the Broken Bridge Lager with its light, golden colour and crisp, dry finish; or the Grey Owl pale ale, offering a mix of fruity, hoppy and malt aromas. Also brewed in-house is the Pioneer Pilsner, the Rogues Red Ale, Classic IPA and the St. Louis Ghost Light.

PABCo supplies beer to a number of other local establishments, including the Prince Albert Royal Canadian Legion, Prince Albert Elks Club, Army Navy & Air Force Veterans and the Venice House Restaurant in Prince Albert as well as The Birch Tree Café in Birch Hills.

Now producing twice as much lager as when PABCo first opened in 2011, Brewer Harvey Dennis says the micro-brewery is running at capacity, and their beer sells as fast as they can produce it. The company makes their own nitrogen, which makes for a finer bubble – or finer foam – on their beer.

PABCo also sells a variety of seasonal flavours, including lime, raspberry, blackberry and chocolate.

Friday night is steak night at PABCo. Try one of their house pints paired with a 10-ounce New York striploin and full sides for just $25. Wings are on special every night Monday through Thursday.

Jam sessions are a popular draw on Wednesday nights, with open mic starting at 9 p.m. and every day complimentary popcorn is served after 4pm.

PABCo is a locally-owned business, owned jointly between Rob McLeod, Patricia Scott, Larry Boettcher, Doug Cooper and Brian Scott. PABCo is active in the community, contributing to numerous causes and sponsoring two adult slo-pitch teams.

Prince Albert Brewing Company can be found at 1425 Sixth Ave. E. The off-sale store opens at 9:30 am daily featuring a convenient drive through. The pub and restaurant opens daily at 11 a.m.
