Best Hiking Trails: Little Red River Park

Oct 1, 2014 | 10:50 PM

There is a variety of outdoor activities visitors can take advantage of when visiting Little Red River Park, however it is the hiking and cross-country skiing trails that most people praise.

The park offers 30 kilometres of nature, hiking and cycling, as well as cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing trails. It is close to city limits and a great place to enjoy nature.

“The park is a special place not only for me as a mountain biker, runner and cross-country skier, but it’s a special place for a lot of people that take their kids there to go tobogganing and have picnics and wiener roasts and just have a nice walk in the wilderness,” said Mike Horn with Fresh Air Experience.

“It’s pretty incredible,” he added.

Horn who said he visits Little Red River Park an estimated 40 or 50 times a year is also the organizer of the annual Pine Needle Mountain Bike Festival. Each year funds raised during the bike festival are donated to a local cause or project, this year Horn has organized for those funds to go towards repairs at Little Red River Park.

Horn said one of the most popular trails in the park is the River Trail. It is approximately five km long and begins and ends at the parks Cosmopolitan Lodge. Sadly, due to heavy rains, extreme flooding and Mother Nature’s wrath, a retaining wall that holds up part of the park’s River Trail is damaged and needs to be repaired.

“The plan was to dedicate the funds to that and fix it,” said Horn. “It’s been a problem for a while and hopefully this is the gentle push to get that project done and we are excited to be able to help do that.”

The Pine Needle Mountain Bike Festival took place in early June. Horn said they are preparing to announce the total amount of funds they raised during the event soon. He said he is pretty certain the amount raised was somewhere between $5,500 and $6,000.

Even though Little Red River Park is only a short drive from the City of Prince Albert, it still feels like a backcountry outdoor escape.

“You wouldn’t even think that you were in the city limits, it’s just unbelievable,” said Horn. “There is so much to see in the way the river snakes through the park and it’s very scenic.”

“If you are into the outdoors and live an active lifestyle it is the perfect place. It caters to the recreational enthusiast for sure,” Horn added.

Some popular cross-country ski trails at Little Red River Park include Tower Trail Loop, West Trail Loop, Ravine Trail Wilderness and of course River Trail Loop, which is lit for night skiing.
