Bev’s Fish and Seafood

Whether its great seafood you want or fresh fish from Saskatchewan waters, Bev’s Fish and Seafood is the best place in Prince Albert to get it.

Nominations have confirmed it and thanks to numerous votes, Bev’s Fish and Seafood is the winner in this year’s Best of the Best for Best Fish and Best Seafood.

A family run business, Bev’s Fish and Seafood has served the community since 1986. Owner Bev Vermette took over the business from his brother in the late 90s and eventually it is anticipated that the business will be passed down to Vermette’s son Lowell Vandale.

Vandale a journeyman plumber by trade, but returned to the family business three years ago. He said it has been nice to catch up on the extra family time since his return and does hope to keep the business running within the family.

Walleye is Bev’s Fish and Seafood number 1 seller, but they sell everything from northern pike, white fish, and lake trout all of which are caught in northern Saskatchewan. For those that prefer seafood, they also sell king crab legs, lobster tails, shrimp scallops, mussels, clams, tilapia, and sole to name a few.

All northern fish brought to Bev’s Fish and Seafood is split, ribbed, deboned and vacuum packed by hand at their South Industrial Drive location.

“We can get anywhere from 600 pounds to 1,600 pounds of fish in a day,” said Vandale. “The most we have ever done is probably 2,200 pounds of fish in one day.”

Vandale said it’s a team effort to get the fish ready for purchase and takes approximately two minutes to split, rib, and debone a single fish, which considering their demand is sometimes a challenging task.

In fact, the demand for fish at Bev’s Fish and Seafood does continue to climb. Last year, Vandale and Vermette figure they sold approximately 80,000 pounds of northern fish alone.

“The fish sells itself,” said Vandale. “We have the freshest fish.”

“We started out fairly small and we are not big yet but we do do a fair volume,” said Vermette. “Via word of mouth, it spreads out.”

In 2007, Bev’s Fish and Seafood expanded to a second location on 15th Street East to help service that demand.

“We opened it up and it turned out the sales have doubled,” said Vermette. “The amount of fish we sell in a year is amazing.”

Bev’s Fish and Seafood is located at 320 South Industrial Drive and at 801 15th Street East.
