Best Physiotherapist : Hillside Physical Health & Fitness

Oct 1, 2014 | 1:51 PM

The crew at Hillside Physical Health & Fitness help to improve their patient’s quality of life by identifying their restrictions and then restoring their ability to move and function after an injury.

Hillside Physical Health & Fitness has five physiotherapists and an exercise therapist on staff and they specialize in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of all types of injuries as well as education regarding injury recovery and rehab. Fitness and athletic training are also key areas of focus.

“At our clinic we treat all kinds of injuries,” said Keith Zawislak, physiotherapist, co-owner of Hillside Physical Health & Fitness. “We specialize in sports injuries, motor vehicle accident injuries and work related injuries as well as injuries sustained at home or at play.”

Zawislak said on a patient’s first visit himself or one of the other physiotherapists at the clinic will start an assessment by asking the client about their injury and how long it has been bothering them.

“We try to get them to describe their pain to us:  where it is and what kind of activities or positions aggravate or provoke their discomfort; was there a mechanism of injury or was it a gradual onset, that kind of thing”, said Zawislak.  “And then from there we do a hands on assessment including movement tests, strength tests and specific tests for the joint or body part involved.”

“From that information we make a diagnosis and then explain to the client how we can treat them and describe what we feel would be best for them as far as activity level, correction of posture, avoidance of re-injury, strengthening etc.”

Zawislak said a doctor’s referral is not needed to see a physiotherapist in Saskatchewan, however some insurance companies may request it.

“It’s self referral – you can literally walk in and say I want to see a physiotherapist and we go from there,” he said. ” Or at times a doctor may refer you for treatment.”

What sets Hillside Physical Health & Fitness apart from other clinics in the area is their highly trained and professional staff plus their Fitness Centre.

“We use our gym for rehab, however, it is also a fitness centre that is open to the public,” said Zawislak.

The fitness centre at Hillside Physical Health & Fitness is a fully equipped gym with a non-competitive atmosphere. There is a selection of cardiovascular and strength training options plus monthly memberships as well as personal training services.

Zawislak said they are very proud of their gym. He said the turf they have laid down in the centre of it is a very handy and important rehab tool used at their facility – the only one in Prince Albert with turf.

“The turf has allowed us to change our approach to treatment of some injuries – we can watch people walk and run on a more natural surface and use the turf to rebuild activity levels.  Working on the turf allows us to progress treatment levels while the client is with us as opposed to having them do the exercises on their own without us present.”

The turf is also used by the gym members for all sorts of exercises, including pushing / pulling, sprinting and resistance and coordination training.  The turf surface is easier on the joints and mimics real life situations.

During the spring and summer months Hillside Physical Health & Fitness also offers an off ice hockey conditioning program. The program offers athletes special training and attention that helps to improve their overall fitness and reduce the chance of future injuries allowing the athlete to remain on the ice instead of the sidelines.
