Santa helps roll out new program in Prince Albert

An agency relatively new to the Prince Albert area, helped spread some Christmas cheer on Sunday.

The Saskatchewan Down Syndrome Society hosted a Christmas party at Minto Bowl. Society Chair Brittany Luddington said events like this are a great way for the children to interact but also help the parents.

“For parents to talk to one another and just learn from each other,” she said.

The Saskatchewan Down Syndrome Society is based in Regina but Luddington said they are expanding and want to let families in the Prince Albert area know supports are available. Through the society, families can get information about tax breaks as well as programs offered in their area.

“Services are needed everywhere we go and it’s nice to get some awareness in Prince Albert because there’s lots of people around who need it,” she said.

Tammy Dunn’s 16-month-old son Myles was among those at the party Sunday. She said it was great to see her son given the opportunity to interact with other children like him. She added she also found the event very useful.

“You know like I only know one other child with down syndrome in Prince Albert but I’ve met lots in Saskatoon so it’s nice to be able to interact with other families and they know what we are going through and we can relate to a lot of stories,” she said.

Dunn said the cost to travel to events in Regina can get very expensive and so she’s hoping more events are planned for the future like the one last weekend.
