Local theatre group gives classic comedy new twist

Nov 15, 2018 | 1:00 PM

Prince Albert Community Players is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, and to mark the occasion they’ve decided to celebrate in an odd sort of way.

The group’s take on the classic comedy The Odd Couple, opens Friday night at Rivier Theatre. Director Whitney Kutzan described the show as a new take on an old story.

“The fact that it’s women [in the lead roles] adds different elements rather than men,” she said.

Kutzan said the actors have been rehearsing non-stop, but added being a small community theatre group has its own set of challenges as all the actors have busy lives outside the theatre.

“You know you have a few rehearsals where you are missing an actor here or there and so Wednesday night was kind of the first night in a while we had the whole cast and got to see the whole thing and it was quite good,” she said.

Local theatre enthusiasts will have three opportunities to see the play this weekend at Rivier Theatre. There are shows Friday night and Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. and there is a show Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. Kutzan said the sound of the play is as important to her as the look.

“Reading the play it’s quite quick. It’s full of wit and so just kind of the speed and tempo I think is more important to me even than the visual,” she said.

Kutzan who has only been with the group a short time said everyone is quite excited abou the big anniversary. She added a gala is being planned for next fall.
