Kruger excited to represent Dragons on Team Sask.

A local rugby player says joining Team Saskatchewan during the western championships gives him a second chance after an injury ended his last season early.

Jonty Kruger will be joined by fellow Saskatchewan Rivers Dragons Byron Farrell and Elijah McPherson on Team Saskatchewan during the Under-18 Western Canada Rugby Championships, which runs Aug. 9-12 in Winnipeg. On the female side, local player Kiera Beauchesne will also be wearing Team Saskatchewan’s colours.

Kruger may be the player most excited for the opportunity. Last year he was nationals bound but could not attend the tournament due to a broken collarbone.

“It’s such a great feeling. I was so sad I couldn’t go to Calgary last year, but now it’s phenomenal, especially now with all my friends,” Kruger said.

Kruger, Farrell, and McPherson have been playing on the Dragons together for the past three years. Kruger has a year on them, joining the team as an under-ager in Grade 8. Kruger said the three clicked right away.

“We had great communication and we just got together and started playing rugby,” Kruger said. “We’re always training together.”

Kruger will be playing as a loose forward for Team Saskatchewan, while Farrell and McPherson will find themselves in the backs.

“We’re going to have to play B.C., super good teams. And Alberta, they always play top with nationals, so it’s going to be very, very challenging,” Kruger said. “With Manitoba, I think we can manage, but against those two it’s going to be really tough.”
