Man linked to violent home invasion receives prison sentence

Jun 1, 2018 | 12:00 PM

A man who at one time wrote in a Facebook post “police can’t catch us” has received a three-and-a-half year prison sentence after pleading guilty to several charges.

Danny Daniels, 29, was one of three people involved in a home invasion January 19 northwest of Prince Albert, in which an 82-year-old woman was assaulted. Daniels appeared at Prince Albert Provincial Court May 25 and pleaded guilty to break and enter with intent; theft of a sport utilty vehicle; possession of property obtained by crime; and assault.

According to the statement of facts read in court on May 25, RCMP received a call at approximately midnight on Jan. 19. The elderly lone occupant of the rural residence advised RCMP that her alarm went off, and she could not see anything outside. Crown said the woman opened her front door and one of the accused pushed his way in. After shoving her, Crown said the accused asked the woman “where’s the keys? where’s the keys?” then proceeded to the bedroom of the residence where he located her keys and purse and shoved her to the side again before leaving the residence. The intruder then went back outside and jumped in her car with Danny Daniels and the two attempted to drive away but lost control near the end of the driveway and hit the ditch.

Daniels was followed by witnesses as he walked down the highway. The other occupant of the stolen vehicle fled the scene into the bush. Daniels was arrested by RCMP a short time later and a search of the vehicle revealed a bolt cutter, a pry bar, a flashlight and a fishing knife. Further investigation of the rural property revealed a garage door latch was broken and the suspects gained entry into an out building as well as a large shed.

The Crown was seeking a five-year jail sentence but during the sentencing hearing, the judge recognized the fact Daniels had entered a guilty plea and the fact that he did not enter the residence and sentenced him to three-and-a-half years. Daniels was given credit for 119 days served on remand. The court also ordered Daniels enter a DNA sample into a criminal database. He is restricted from possessing firearms for the next 10 years.

Daniels’ co-accused are Jade Ermine and Silas Ermine. Jade Ermine’s case is scheduled to be back in court on June 11 and Silas Ermine did not show up for his last court appearance last month. A warrant was issued for his arrest.
