P.A.’s McDougall looks to don maple leaf

The honours keep coming for Nipawin Hawks’ defenceman Josh McDougall.

The 19-year-old Prince Albert product recently signed a letter of commitment to Mercyhurst University. Now he’s hoping to add a ‘World Junior A Challenge’ appearance to his resume.

The former Tisdale Trojan said he’s excited for his upcoming chances to showcase his game.

“I can’t really complain, I’m really happy to be getting these opportunities. It’s nice to know hard work is paying off,” he told northeastNOW following a 2-1 win over Estevan Tuesday night.

He said Hawks’ head coach Doug Johnson pulled him aside this past weekend to give him the news he was one of nine Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League standouts to receive an invite to the tournament.

“I am just really happy to have the opportunity on this level; it’s pretty cool,” McDougall said.

Sixty players from western Canada will convene in Calgary from Dec. 2 to 5 vying to make the Team West roster — McDougall’s goal.

“Going in you really want to make the team but you have to work your hardest, you have to force your way on,” he said.

Joining him will be Jacob Wassermann (Humboldt), Tim Gould and Jared Hamm (Notre Dame), Levi Kleiboer (Battlefords), Crystopher Collin (Flin Flon), Ben Hiltz (Weyburn), Michael McChesney (Estevan) and Chantz Petruic (Yorkton).

Flin Flon head coach Mike Reagan will be a member of the staff in Truro, Nova Scotia beginning Dec. 10.
