Grey Cup champion ends Healthy Community Project with speech

Feb 6, 2014 | 4:06 PM

Saskatchewan Roughrider Levi Steinhauer from Moose Jaw made an appearance at SIAST on Thursday to speak to students about healthy living.

Steinhauer said he was happy to get the opportunity to speak about his lifestyle and experiences, including his most recent accomplishment of winning the Grey Cup.

“It’s just awesome to come back and give back to the community and then as well, just share our experience of what we went through with other people. It’s an awesome thing to win a Grey Cup and it’s even better to share it and let everyone else enjoy it with you. So that’s what I like to do,” said Steinhauer.

Considering the event was focused on healthy lifestyles, Steinhauer thought it was fitting he was asked to speak. Besides being a professional football player, he is also taking kinesiology at the University of Saskatchewan. Many of the students had questions for him, both about the game and tips on healthy living.

“It’s perfect; football and being healthy run one-on-one together. We do a lot of training and we have to watch our diets. It’s perfect to partner up with an event like this and speak on both accounts,” he said.

Dr. June Anonson with the College of Nursing at the University of Saskatchewan was the principal investigator for the Healthy Campus project. It began four years ago and she said their goal was to improve health on campuses.

“What we were trying to do was empower the students, encourage them and support them to look at their own environment to see how they can make it healthier,” said Anonson.

She said they had more than 800 students engaged in the process in different ways including completing surveys, attending town hall meetings and volunteering.

“We’re thrilled,” said Anonson speaking of the results of the project. Almost 300 students attended the last forum they held at the E.A. Rawlinson Centre.

On Thursday, many students lined up after to pose with Steinhauer for pictures and get his autograph.
