First Student bus driver who complained about safety is fired

A school bus driver who complained about the safety of her bus said she is now out of a job.

Brenda Milligan has driven school buses in the Arcola area of southeast Saskatchewan for the past 20 years. She said the three other drivers in that southeast area have resigned.

Milligan said she got up Thursday morning to find the school bus she operated was gone from her yard.

“I phoned them to see why the bus had been taken out of my yard, and she said I had been terminated,” she said.

The company — First Student Canada — took over school bus operations last September. Shortly before Christmas, the four drivers complained about what they claim are safety issues involving the buses, including concerns over brakes and a lack of snow tires.

The drivers parked their buses and refused to operate them earlier this week, and went public with their concerns.

First Student Canada has issued a written statement saying under company policy they would not discuss personnel issues. The statement also said they would never put a bus on the road unless confident of its safety.

“Each of our school buses follows a stringent daily, monthly and annual maintenance program. Safety is our top priority,” the statement said.

The drivers admit all four buses in question are certified as roadworthy.
