Controlled Flare

SaskEnergy conducting controlled flare

A controlled flare will be conducted by SaskEnergy at a natural gas compressor station located near St. Louis Wednesday.

The flare will begin at 9 a.m., and continue until approximately 12 p.m. according to a media release from SaskEnergy. The flare is necessary to perform maintenance work on the gas line system at the station.

During this process, natural gas will be released from the infrastructure at the compressor station in a controlled burn. While the gas lines will be isolated from the remainder of the system, flaring is required to remove the remaining gas from the line before work can begin.

Flaring is an industry standard procedure when natural gas needs to be released from a gas line and reduces the carbon footprint of the vented natural gas by 85 per cent.

Residents in St. Louis and anyone travelling in the area may see a small flame within the yard at the compressor station. The area around the flares will be supervised to ensure public safety.

SaskEnergy has notified local Emergency Responders of the upcoming events. There will be no disruptions to natural gas service to SaskEnergy residential, business or industrial customers in the area during this process.
