Legal challenge considered by Sask government if Ottawa okays BHP Billiton takeover

Saskatchewan could mount a legal challenge is the federal government decides to approve BHP Billiton's bid for PotashCorp.

It is one of the options Premier Brad Wall is considering , although he won't go into details.

“If this is forced on us, if this is yes with conditions, the province of Saskatchewan has options. All of them are being explored and will be pursued. Some of them are legal,” said Wall.

The options also include taxation measures, but again Wall was not willing to go into details. He argues Ottawa has not yet stated its position and he said that needs to happen first.

The federal government must decide whether to approve BHP Billiton's takeover bid by Wednesday.
