La Ronge celebrates National Child’s Day

It was crafts and games for some youngsters in La Ronge, Sask. Saturday.
Kids First North put on an event for National Child’s Day.
Merle Larson, regional supervisor for Kids First North, said the event at the Kikinahk Friendship centre had a child/parent play corner, activities, a bouncy structure, entertainment and supper.
While she wanted families to have fun, she said it was about more than that – it was about learning the rights of children.
“Sometimes children don’t know their rights too, so this is going to raise awareness of the parents to put through to the children,” she said.
Larson said it is something that is important and many people don’t know.
The day focused on one right from the United Nations Convention of the Rights of a Child.
“This year’s theme is the right of expression, so the children’s right for this year is to express them through art or music, or whatever they want to do for their form of expression.”
She said the day was also important to encourage families to spend time together. There are not many events in La Ronge that are family friendly.
“That’s why we make a big deal out this, because I don’t know how many things there are like this that happens throughout the year.”
She said the only other event she could think of immediately was Canada Day celebrations.
