It's a tale of a community coming together.

Residents of Tisdale helped raise funds for a Ukrainian immigrant, who is diagnosed with brain cancer, to help bring his wife and son to Canada for a visit.

Ruth Howes with the Northeast Newcomers Centre said businesses offered help in the form of a raffle and the community organized a BBQ

“Just in that week alone that BBQ and the action and donations from the community came in excess of $11,000.” But money wasn’t the only obstacle we faced, Howes said.

“(We) had to contend with the issue of a visa. Our local MP Randy Hoback and his office was very instrumental in being able to reduce the wait time which is normally 10 businesses days.”

With their assistance the man’s wife got her visa within 24 hours, Howes said.
