Huge Canadian Native Fastball tournament ready to rock in PA

Jul 31, 2014 | 6:18 AM

If you didn’t get your softball fix satisfied last weekend for the Senior ‘C’ Men’s Provincials, have no fear.

The 40th Canadian Native National Fastball Championships will kick off Friday at 8 a.m. and is a massive tournament expected to bring in more than 5,000 visitors here in Prince Albert.

According to tournament chairman Terry Sanderson, more than 1,200 athletes will play in 149 games in five different age divisions over the next three days.

Organizing a tournament of this size has certainly eaten up many man hours from a large committee of volunteers.

“It’s time consuming, but has been very rewarding in the last few days,” said Sanderson. “It takes a lot of time getting out there and getting sponsors. We needed those corporate sponsors and local sponsors to make this thing happen.”

The James Smith First Nation and the Prince Albert Grand Council are the co-hosts for this year’s tournament and both have teams competing.

James Smith has teams in the Masters Men’s, Senior Men’s division, while PAGC has a team in the U21 Men’s Division.

Sanderson expects “some elite fastball” to be played this weekend at both Prime Minister’s Park and Lion’s Park.

Games start at 8 a.m. on Friday.

Weekend passes for the tournament are $30, which are good for every game this weekend.
